Sight Translation

Sight translation is the least commonly used mode of interpretation, and it is defined as the oral rendition into a target language of material written in the source language.

Sight translation may be required at the court of justice or other legal proceedings, or whenever a foreign language document needs to be ¨read¨ and orally rendered into the target language.

It is considered a simple task and, as a consequence, not too much attention is devoted to it. Nevertheless, it is just as difficult as simultaneous, consecutive, or any other kind of interpretation. Besides, we have to bear in mind that court interpreters should never paraphrase when they are actually interpreting in court, and that requires the experience our interpreters have.

Another important aspect is delivery, since it is essential for the interpreter to enunciate loudly and clearly, with proper intonation and voice modulation. Ideally, in this kind of interpretation, the translation should sound as if the interpreter was merely reading a document, even if that seems difficult to achieve.

Our highly qualified interpreters have years of experience with the sight translation of documents at court as well as other settings.
