Modes of Interpretation

Interpretation is the activity by which two or more persons who speak different languages are able to communicate orally. The conduit that serves as the bridge to establish such communication is the interpreter and his/her job entails the transferring of thoughts and ideas of what is said in a thorough and faithful manner. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a verbatim (word-for-word) activity for this would not convey the intended thought. The interpreter’s memory stores the meaning of the speaker’s words and not the words themselves.

The interpreter can accomplish such task in several ways; consequently, the three different modes of interpreting are:

• Consecutive Mode

• Simultaneous Mode

• Sight Translation
